WHAT IS ART THERAPY?

Art therapy addresses mental health concerns through creative expression. It is a form of psychotherapy that offers a variety of benefits to diverse populations. Art is able to cut across language barriers, which makes this form of therapy accessible to individuals of any age/background.

Populations who have benefitted from Revival Through Hands Art Therapy include:

  • At-risk youth

  • Individuals with mental health concerns

  • Older adults (Dementia/Alzheimer’s Disease)

  • Individuals on the Autism Spectrum

  • Children

  • Individuals going through life transitions/self-growth

The art therapist focuses on the “process” opposed to the “final product” during art-making, as the process provides an opening for further self-exploration. No art background is required to participate in art therapy. Based on the client’s needs, the art therapist prepares art directives that explore different themes and concepts relevant to the client. Together, the therapist and client create goals for the duration of the sessions. The amount of sessions needed for each client vary based on need; however, it is common to complete approximately 8 sessions in total.

The benefits of participating in art therapy may include:

  • Self-Expression

  • Emotional Regulation

  • Psychoeducation

  • Building Resilience/ Coping Mechanisms

  • Addressing and Navigating Trauma

  • Increase Self-Esteem/Confidence

  • Improve Fine-Motor Skills

  • Promote Self-Discovery/Self-Growth

  • Embrace Play

Art Therapy Services

  • Art therapy sessions are client-centered and designed to meet the specific needs of each client. Together, the art therapist and client formulate goals that address major themes and challenges which may include: managing anxiety, depression, self-exploration, trauma, grief, strengthening communication, increase confidence, stress management, building social skills, play, etc. Art therapy sessions provide a safe space for clients to express themselves in a creative way. This is particularly beneficial when we have difficulty putting our experiences into words. Sessions are process-oriented - which means no art experience is necessary.
